Colonial History of 5 Countries in Our Region:

Malawi was colonized by Britain. In 1964 it was recognized as a full member of the English Commonwealth. Malawi prospered in colonization and gained its independence peacefully on July 6th, 1964.

Angola was colonized by the Portuguese. They much resisted Portuguese rule. They were poor under Portugal and on November 11th, 1975 there was a coup and the Portuguese were overthrown in Angola.

Zambia was colonized by Britain. They were very poor under Britain and in 1953 broke away from Britain rule to join the Federation. However they became truly independent when the Federation dissolved in October 1964.

Cameroon was a colony of France. They were ruled very liberally and on January 1st, 1960 they separated from France, peacefully.

Democratic Republic of Congo was a colony of Belgium and were very poor. In 1960 after much political unrest Dem. Rep. of Congo became independent.
